A private driver-guide is the default way foreign visitors see Sri Lanka, and for most people it is the right call. It is not the only one.
Roads here are narrow, busy and governed by conventions that take months to read. Distances that look trivial on a map take three times as long as you expect. A driver removes all of that, and a guide who knows when to leave to beat the crowds is worth more than the vehicle.
Self-driving works if you are staying in one region, particularly the south coast. Trains work beautifully on the hill line and along the coast to Galle, and we build them into routes wherever they are genuinely better than the road.
What we will not do is put you in a van for six hours a day and call it a tour.
